Types of Artificial Intelligence

The capabilities of artificial intelligence, its functionality, allow classifying it into various types. The knowledge of such systems makes us aware of the level of development of AI systems and their application in practice. Generally, there are three types of Artificial Intelligence.



Narrow Artificial Intelligence (Weak AI):

The most widespread form of Artificial Intelligence which is currently used is narrow AI. It is engineered to execute a single specific task or a few tasks. Narrow AI lacks human intelligence and it is only applied within the boundaries.

Examples of Narrow AI:

  • Voice Assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa.
  • YouTube, Netflix and Amazon recommendation systems.
  • Fingerprint unlock and face recognition.
  • Google maps and GPS.

The vast majority of applications of AI in everyday life are Narrow AI.

General Artificial Intelligence (Strong AI):

General AI are machines that are capable of thought, learning and executing activities as human beings do. This AI could comprehend, reason, problem solve and make decisions in various areas absent of human intervention.

Nowadays there is no General AI. It remains a theoretical idea and a field of research. Researchers and scientists are doing efforts to develop machines that can have human intelligence, but they have not reached this yet.

Example:

  • The ability to learn all kinds of things as a human being and use the knowledge in real life scenarios.

Super Artificial Intelligence:

The Super AI is a theoretical type of Artificial Intelligence that would become more intelligent than humans in every sense in terms of creativity, decision-making, emotions, and problem-solving. Such AI is only present in theories and science fiction films.

Super AI would be able to do even more than humans and even come up with his/her ideas and innovations.

Example:

  • The high level of AI depicted in films such as Iron Man (JARVIS) or Ex Machina.
Artificial Intelligence is evolving rapidly, but currently, humans only use Narrow AI in real-world applications. While General AI and Super AI remain part of future possibilities, understanding these types helps us prepare for the future of technology. As AI continues to grow, it is important to use it responsibly and ethically for the benefit of society.
